  • How to reach a state of mind where you can both be genuine and look genuine.

Modern Media Seminar

Modern Media Seminar: The truth. Unfiltered.

If your only exposure to how “the media” works is through television and movies, then you need to hear this seminar. The old romantic notions about the news industry have all but faded away. You need to know how modern newsroom employees go about their jobs, and their daily routines. This seminar is filled with the advanced inside information that can put you ahead in the race for a Positive Position. A working knowledge of how news gets made can make you or break you.

Learn:

  • The many kinds of people that make up a newsroom. What they do, and how they do it.
  • How real decisions get made, and why some stories will never make air.
  • Which “ears” in the newsroom you need to bend to get your message a fair hearing.
  • How to time your approaches when you want coverage.
  • The real timing of a newscycle, so your response doesn’t miss a deadline.
  • How to ensure that your message gets across, and your Positive Position stays intact.

Putting Out the Fire

“Putting Out the Fire”: Organization-saving advice that will keep a bad situation from getting worse.

Somewhere, somehow, sometime… there will be a tragic turn in your organization. It might be directly related to the work you do — it might be on the fringes. But HOW and WHEN you deal with the media onslaught will determine the long-term posture of your organization. What you do in the first few minutes after a “disaster” may not change any minds that day, or even the next week… but it can improve your long-term posture and community standing.

Learn:

  • Who are “The Media”, and what do they do?
  • The different types of news media, and their different needs.
  • Guidelines on how to deal with reporters and photographers, so you don’t make a bad situation worse.
  • How to take control of an interview, and avoid intimidation.
  • How to draft and communicate a “key message.”
  • How to appear more confident (and credible) on camera.

** This seminar makes for a great introduction to the material presented in the “Modern Media Seminar.”

A Positive Position

News travels at the speed of light… and bad news travels even faster. Your “trial-by-fire” may well be a “trial-by-media.”

You’ll never know when that bad news will strike, and the reporters and live trucks won’t be far behind. In most instances, there are few things you can do to make the situation better… and many that can make them worse.

Do nothing…? That’s the worst choice.

The old playbook used to call for “No comment.” Unfortunately, “no comment” won’t kill the story — it just gives other people the chance to decide for the news consumer how to interpret your tragedy.

Positive Position Media Consulting removes that fear by taking you inside the process of how news becomes “news of the day.” We offer valuable insights on how to respond to interviews in emergency situations - and how you can craft the messages that instill confidence.

You won’t know when… You won’t know how… but you will need this information, to prevent an adverse situation from becoming worse.

Who is this for?

Anyone who has a stake in ensuring a long-term “Positive Position” for a company or organization can benefit from our training. Because news travels at the speed of light, you need to have this information in the hands of the middle managers most likely to be on the “front lines” of a news event:

  • Educators-school boards, superintendents & principals
  • Managers-private & government
  • Elected officials
  • Emergency responders-police & fire

What is it?

When it comes to the news, a “Positive Position” can be measured in a number of ways:

  • Your ease in getting coverage for good events.
  • Your ease in earning trust when bad events occur.

But the easiest way is…

  • The face someone makes when they hear the name of your organization.

With few exceptions, you only have time to make one impression on the hundreds of thousands of news consumers in your market. Make it the right one, and leave in as positive a position as possible.
